Does the waypoint mission upload to the aircraft or does it fly via virtual stick commands like a lot of DJI drones using Litchi?

Bought this drone a couple of weeks ago. Nice price for the features, but I am super discouraged that you have to have the drone in the air while setting up a waypoint flight? Am I correct about this? While the drone is hovering there eating battery, you program the flight at that time?… Can you set the direction of view at each waypoint? What about altitude?
